The Joker, as portrayed by Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight Trilogy, is a criminal mastermind and agent of chaos who throws Gotham City into turmoil.

His origins are deliberately ambiguous. He tells conflicting stories about the scars that form his Glasgow smile, suggesting a past filled with abuse and violence, but the veracity of these accounts is questionable. He is designated as subject 'PG-8144' by Gotham authorities.

The Joker's motivations are primarily to demonstrate the corruptibility of society and expose the hypocrisy of established order. He is an anarchist who believes that everyone, given the right circumstances, is capable of succumbing to evil. His first appearance in The Dark Knight (2008) marks the beginning of his reign of terror in Gotham.
